Farm Update: Calving Season

Hi Friend,

With a maternal moo and a gentle nudge of a nose, one of our mama cows encourages her newborn calf to stand up on its spindly legs. On wobbly legs, the calf wanders back to nurse for the first time, wagging its tail happily. The joy of newborn life.

Late winter, early spring marks one of our favorite times of year on the farm… calving season.

Calving Season at Farm Fresh

In case you haven’t heard, we don’t just grow farm-fresh wheat berries. Our farm is also a working ranch specializing in Angus and Angus/Simmental cross cattle (you can see more at Farm Fresh Beef). We take great pride in our cattle herd, and continually look for new ways to use our cows in conjunction with our farming to better our farm.

A tiny, new calf surrounded by his mama and aunts. Often you will see an cow play aunt to a group of calves while the mamas sneak away to eat breakfast.

Calving season is one of our favorite times of year with little calves scurrying around the calving pasture. They play chicken with the feed truck, then take off running with their tails in the air like monkeys. Sometimes, they’re overcome with curiousity, and will follow us around as we walk through the pasture checking on the mama cows. And sometimes, they fall soundly asleep in the sun, and like an exhausted toddler, could sleep through the sound of a train.

Kevin found this little guy sound asleep in the sorting pen, waiting his turn for branding.

Happy Milling!
