My 5 Baking With Freshly Milled Flour Must-Haves

Hi Friend,

What kitchen items could you not live without? You know, your go-to kitchen utensils that you fall back on again and again?

A glimpse into my kitchen stash.

A glimpse into my kitchen stash.

I’ve always secretly prided myself on being a semi-kitchen minimalist. Okay, I’m not a true minimalist, but I do have drawers in my kitchen that are empty and I try my hardest to keep them that way. However, when I started milling my own flour I found myself adding more to my kitchen collection. Now I’m walking a fine line between keeping a feeling of simplicity in my kitchen and having the tools that make baking with freshly milled flour fun.

That’s why I want to share with you my go-to kitchen utensils that I grab again and again for baking with freshly milled flour.

My 5 Must-Haves for Baking with Freshly Milled Flour

1. Flour Mill.

This one should go without saying, but the right flour mill can really make the difference. I personally love my KoMo Classic mill, but have heard great things about Mockmill and Nutrimill. If you are in the market for a new mill, I totally recommend Pleasant Hill Grain. They have a huge selection of mills and their customer service is fantastic!

I chose my KoMo Classic for its finer grinding settings and wood finish. So far I’ve been extremely happy with it.

2. An assortment of wooden spoons.

I love using wooden spoons over plastic or metal. I have a few that vary in length and size from Pampered Chef (thank you Aunt Debbie!) that are my absolute favorite.

3. Silicone Baking Mat.

I purchased this silicone baking mat as a Father’s Day present for Kevin before we started milling, but it comes in so handy. It may be me, but I think dough made with freshly milled flour is a little wetter than all-purpose making the dough stickier. This mat cuts down on the amount of additional flour I add and makes clean up a cinch. The measurements along the side and middle take the guessing game out of measuring pie dough and scones.

4. Kitchenaid Scraper Bowl Attachment.

I didn’t know I needed this attachment until my mother-in-law gifted it to me. Other than the dough hook, I hardly use any other attachment on my Kitchenaid stand mixer because it scrapes so nicely.

5. Wilton Batter Spoons.

I purchased these batter spoons before our first photo shoot to get uniformly sized muffins, and I thought I would give them away soon after. I now use them all the time for measuring batter for muffins and donuts, dropping biscuit dough on my baking stone, and scooping cookie dough onto baking sheets.

My Bonus Must-Have:

A Baking Stone.

I have this Pampered Chef stone (once again, thank you Aunt Debbie!) that I use to bake my biscuits, pizzas, and flatbread. It gives my baked goods a little more crispiness.

That’s my 5 must-haves (plus one) for baking with freshly milled flour. We’d love to hear what yours are in the comments below.
